Thanks for joining our mitten-a-long! To encourage maximum participation, we have 3 different style basic knitting patterns – cuff up, top down, and Bev’s 2-needle pattern (thanks Bev!). We also have a basic crochet pattern. Over the next 5 days, we will create one mitten. After that, it should be easy to start over and make the second (or third or fourth)!

Each day’s information also contains the pattern steps and a photo or two to help identify the progress for that day.

If you’d rather have the pattern written in a more traditional style, a link is posted on each pattern's page to the pattern in a .pdf format (requiring Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or newer) along with the steps for each day.

The patterns have been written/adapted for the following sizes: 2/3 yrs (circ. 5.5"/14cm), 4/5 yrs (circ. 6"/15.25 cm), 6/7 yrs (circ. 6.5"/16.5cm), 8 yrs/wm sm (circ. 7"/17.75cm)

These patterns were written using worsted weight yarn (the gauge is reflected on the patterns) so heavier yarn will make a larger mitten, lighter yarn will make a smaller one than if you are working to the gauge stated in the pattern. Remember we want these mittens to be warm, so we’ll be making a firmer fabric than you might use for an afghan or a sweater and using a smaller hook or needles than you’d probably use normally.

Questions are welcomed, so please don’t be afraid to ask them on list. We’ll post answers and additional tips as the need arises.

• To keep track of the size you’re making, go through the pattern before you start knitting and highlight the numbers that coordinate with your size. The first number is the smallest size with adjustments for the larger sizes in parenthesis, like this ... small (medium, large, x-large)

• If you make adjustments to the pattern, such as a different length, be sure to make a note on your pattern so the mate turns out the same!

• If you want to make the knitted mittens a little fancier and use a stitch pattern on the hand, the stitch multiple for all but size “6/7 years” is 4. Size 6/7 is a multiple of 2.

• one mitten took about 3 hours to complete (not at one sitting, mind you). It may take you more or less time to complete, depending on what’s currently going on in your life ;)
